Probation refers to being released into the community without serving a custodial sentence and is reserved for minor offenses. In contrast, parole offers early release from prison for those required to serve some time for their offenses.

Seeking probation records in Alaska is far less stressful with the steps provided in this streamlined article. This resource also covers all the ways to search for probation records in Alaska in one convenient place.

How To Run an Alaska Probation Search for Free

Community supervision differs from probation by providing compliance incentives for offenders released to into the community.

According to the state bill, Graduated Sanctions & Incentives S.B. 91 §§ 114-115, 141, revised considerations for probation include reviewing previous positive behaviors, ensuring good time eligibility to offenders wearing electronic tracking devices and prioritizing prison beds for most likely to re-offend inmates. Community supervision relieves overcrowded jails and provides criminals incentives not to re-offend.

Standard probation, ordered by the court, is either added to the end of a sentence or issued instead of the offender spending time incarcerated. For inquiries about community supervision or probation in the state, citizens can search the Alaska Court System using its CourtView public access website search option.1

The search provides options to search by:

  • Case Number
  • Name
  • Ticket/Citation Number

The case number search requires a whole case number. If the searcher doesn’t have a case number, there are several ways to locate it.

One of the most reliable ways is to view Alaska state’s current criminal cases filed or the criminal cases disposed of.2 Both PDF reports include the most recent filings and have case numbers for each defendant.

If searching for a person by name, the form only requires a first and last name, and the fields only require the first letter. However, a simple search with only the first letters could return thousands of cases.

Putting as much information as possible in the first and last name fields helps narrow the search. Additional search fields include a middle initial, suffix or company name. The case type input field consists of a listing of all Alaska court dispositions.

The search by ticket or citation number requires the following fields:

  • Ticket Number
  • Driver’s License
  • State Issued
  • Vehicle License
  • State Issued

Searching by name or case number brings up a results page with either the defendant’s information or, if using a partial name, a table with listings of all the defendants retrieved from the search. The columns include information about the case, including:

  • Case Number
  • Case Type
  • File Date
  • Party/Company
  • Party Type
  • Date of Birth
  • Case Status
  • Affiliation

Once the individual is found, clicking on the case number in the first column brings the user to a page with the offender’s charges, ticket or citation number, docket list of filings and fees. Any probation information appears here.

To run a probation search for public records concerning a criminal case or offender’s information, searchers can also fill out the case file request form and print it.3 Or, fill it in online or print and write in the information needed and submit it to the following:

Look Up Probation Details in Alaska Through County & Municipal Agencies

According to the Alaska Public Records Act, Section AS 40.25.220(3) most records held by municipal and state governments are considered public information and can be accessed by any member of the public. This includes records held by municipalities.

Citizens are encouraged to assume that all records are public and open to inspection unless there is a legal exception that allows for withholding access. The only reason a record may be withheld from disclosure is if it falls under one of the authorized legal exceptions.

The most efficient way to perform a probation search in counties and cities in Alaska is to visit the locality’s websites.

For example, the City of Fairbanks publishes a public records request form, which interested parties can use to request information from the Clerk.4

Requests can also be made in writing to:

The Alaskan Capital Juneau also has a Municipal Records department. It’s possible to request records from the clerk online using the Juneau Borough request for public records form.5

Records requests can also be made in writing to:

Office of the City Clerk

Finally, the Kenai Peninsula Borough Public Records Department provides a public record request form, although interested parties must create an account and provide their contact details to take advantage of this service.6

Those who would prefer not to register for an account with the GovQA service to use the online search form linked above can contact the borough at the address below:

Kenai Peninsula Borough

Soldotna, AK 99669

Phone: 907-262-4441

In addition to city and borough records departments, police departments can be a useful source of information when performing a probation lookup. Contact details for some major police departments are listed below:

How To Check a Probation Violation in Alaska & Contact Someone’s Supervising Officer

To run a probation lookup and locate an offender’s violations or find their officer’s name, inquirers can use the Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER).7

The search for a case option allows users to search by a specific court, national courts or by court opinions. The PACER system is only for federal probation information, and fees are charged for copies of records.

Contact the Service Center for further information at either +1-800-676-6856 or 210-301-6440.

Citizens can also use the Alaska VINE search option to search for violations or an offender’s probation officer.

Performing a court record search using the resources listed above should indicate which region and/or supervising office is responsible for monitoring the offender after their release. Details of the five regions and their respective offices can be found on the Department of Corrections Probation & Parole Offices page.8

How To Verify Who Is on Parole in Alaska

Alaska is part of the Victim Information & Notification Everyday (VINE) system, which allows crime victims and citizens to search for offenders in the United States.9 VINE provides information about the offender’s current custody status and their case details. VINE is free and confidential.

Searchers can call 1-888-2NV-VINE (+1-888-268-8463) for information 24 hours a day.

To search the Alaska VINE system, searchers can use the form to choose a person, view requested notifications for registered users or have the system guide them. The search field includes searching by name or ID number. First and last name fields only require the first two letters of each name.

The results page would list the offender or all offenders if a partial name search were clicked. If victims of a crime or other citizens want to perform a probation search, VINE is a free and safe option.

Using the information listed above, individuals can carry out an Alaska probation search and find other information about current and former inmates.
